Bartok Guitarsplat - As The Universe Unfolds (1999)

We're not sure what we can say about the work of Rodney Brent/Bartok Guitarsplat. Maybe without works like this, we wouldn't have Bitter Fictions? It's maybe a bit of a stretch, but...

We found an old Exclaim! review that said this CD "hypnotises you into thinking you're Julian Cope, driving through Las Vegas in a rented Volkswagon." If that's a trip you want to take, start here.

Kris Demeanor - Kris Demeanor (1999)

Kris Demeanor has long been a CCPS favourite, with his sly way of twisting society's nipple. In a metaphorical way, that is. His innocent veneer only sharpens the sharp jabs he makes at the parts of our city that, well, suck. Anyways, we're feeling lazy, so we went to the library (so many stairs!!!) and found this:

Which means we can now point you to the download.

Beauty Myth - The Britanee Tapes (1999)

It's been waaaaay to long since we've seen something from one of the Kushner brothers, so we're glad that we can feature this CD from Jeff's project, The Beauty Myth. Recorded as part of a student project, this is remarkably hi-fi compared to those Unsightly tapes. Alternating between power pop and 3/4 time ballads, this is a great, albeit short blast of solid songwriting.

Debunk the myth here.

Aaron Booth - Tune Up (1999)

Carrying on with the shiny digital discs from 1999, here's the first outing from former Sky Suspended/Shecky Forme member Aaron Booth. Booth is quite the songsmith, and this short collection of stripped-down songs shows his attention to crafting subtle, sweet tunes.

Aaron has made his albums available on bandcamp; you can grab this one over there.

Hot Little Rocket - Laika (1999)

We went looking for our copy of this CD last week, as part of the warm up ritual for tonight's Hot Little Rocket reunion show, and had a fair amount of panic when we couldn't find it in with our healthy stock of Calgary CDs. Turns out it was sitting in a big pile of CDs that are waiting to be posted because they've magically hit the 20-year old mark, thus making them eligible for CCPS action. Which is good, because it's pretty much the only way we can bring in any new historical posts at this point.

So, Hot Little Rocket, eh? If any Calgary band should have been huge, it was HLR. Over their career they flirted with success (recording with Steve Albini? Touring China? Come on!), but never quite  We keep going back to this CD in particular - the combination of angular but somehow blurry guitars, Andrew Wedderburn's yip-yowl vocals, and the smooth as butter drumming of Joel Nye make it one our our all time favourite things to come out of this city. And they only got better with time.

Apparently this is on a bunch of streaming services, but you know what? Screw it. Have the download anyways.

Bog Bodies - P.L.A.Y.T.H.I.N.G. (2019)

If our records are correct, it looks like somehow 2018 passed without a new release from weird noise rockers Bog Bodies. Well, good news! They sent us a copy of their new tape! And it's everything we've been, uh.... missing?

We feel like we've kind of said the same thing every time we've posted a Bog Bodies tape. This is fun, weird, and chaotic. So grab the tape from the Bod Bodies bandcamp, buckle up, and enjoy the ride.

STUD - Music For Airports (2018)

As an apology for the late delay of the STUD tape we featured yesterday, Craig Storm sent along a copy of the first STUD tape. This is more of the same great, weird stuff. Short doodles of electronic beeps and boops, kind of demented versions of Trio's "Da Da Da." Which sounds pretty appealing, no?

Get if from the STUD bandcamp.

STUD - Uh Huh!/Oh No! (2018)

We've had a few cases of bad luck with ordering tapes online and not having them show up. We'd been meaning to ask Craig Storm about it, but kept forgetting. So it was pretty exciting when this showed up in the mail last week. This tape is a pair of blippy little tunes that were composed to accompany a suitably weird short film Craig and Arielle McCuaig made. And thanks to the interweb, we can share said film!

INSTANT STRUCTURES from Craig Storm on Vimeo.

We swear there's another song in that video that's not on the tape. Which makes this a bonus bonus!

Looks like you can still order the tape from the STUD bandcamp.
