AWOL - AWOL (1981)

This two-song tape comes to us via Dan Singleton, who played in this Sir Winston Churchill High-based band. This is great early-80's punk, with more in common with, say, the Sturgeons than Riot .303.

Punk Rock Librarian Geoff Owens sent us this picture of the band on the steps of Sir Winston Churchill High School, for archival purposes/laughs.

The CCPS makes no guarantees about satisfaction, but we do recommend this one.

Wagbeard - Clean Shave

We posted this yesterday morning via our Facebook group, and it's been getting some pretty serious traffic, so we may as well share this with the rest of you folks. Legend has it that this is a CD compilation that Steve Elaschuk put together so people would stop bugging him for copies of some of the harder-to find Wagbeard bits and pieces. This includes their self-titled tape, their side of the amazing split 10" they did with the mighty Primrods, tracks from the Bloodbath and Play compilations plus a live session from the CBC (we think). Also as a very, very special bonus is a cover of Guided By Voices' "Motor Away," with Pat on drums and Trevor on guitar.

Sure, it's just duct tape on the cover - but tape is tape, right?

Kitchen at Random - The White Fence

We this this tape is from 1985 or 1986, based on what Greg Kushner tells us.

But that's all we know about it. Get it here.

Marsha - I've Got a Brain (1994)

We like this tape, but we really have no idea who's behind it. The surnames in the credits don't match up with anyone what we've seen so far here.

So we'll just sit back and enjoy it for what it is.

Update: We've got a fix on the band's membership, thanks to a helpful commenter and this site. We're excited to see a Summerlad connection here. Plus: theremin!

Glenn Dixon - Glenn Dixon

We're not sure of the year of this, but Greg Kushner tells us that Glenn Dixon put out a few tapes and has mayhaps gone on to teach English here in Calgary (if this is the case, please don't point him towards our shoddy, grammar-imperfect posts). Adds Greg:

I saw him live once in a bar on 8th avenue (possibly in the York Hotel?) – he had a whole prepared reel-to-reel tape with backing tracks and between-song samples (including the Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd classic “The Wabbit Kicked the Bucket”)!

We can't find any Warner Brothers influences on this. Maybe you can?

Eggs on Legs - 3

Here's another from Greg Kushner's collection. Neither he nor us have any idea where this came from, or who is responsible for it. Best guesses peg this in the mid-80s.

Maybe we're just not in on the yolk.

An Erotic Funeral - The False Prophet (1995)

This tape is one that Greg Kushner bought from the Record Store (one of our favourite places to go when skipping class, back in the day). Lo-fi meets death metal, in one sludge-a-riffic package. What better a post for this Easter weekend?

Get unholy here.

Shadoplay - Live at Van Hanen Sound (1985)

Today's feature is the jazz-fusion band Shadoplay. "Norweigian Rat" was the CJSW hit off this tape some 25 years ago - and Shadoplay is still active today, albeit in a different form.

Get it here.
